The first show ever kept in the Coliseum, months following the venue’s February 1964 opening, looked the newest Four Freshmen while the Four Preps. (Which was, of course, the fresh Greek Week inform you.) This new Five Season did the original Homecoming performance around in Oct ’64 (my pal Mindy Moore Bacon recalls going, regardless of if she was only inside junior high), and you will Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong introduced their All stars here having a free of charge let you know into the February 1965, used three days later on because of the Johnny Mathis while the Young Us americans.

Due to problems about the audio from the earlier suggests, new school earned Atlanta-depending Baker Audio (which had over This new Beatles’ 1965 let you know at Atlanta Arena) to try to boost the sound to have Armstrong, however,, surprisingly, truth be told there was not much they may do towards cavernous stadium.
I asked individuals I went to university that have – although some which was born in Athens otherwise went to UGA – to generally share a common concert thoughts about inform you. Here are some of those memory:
My personal classmate Tom Hodgson told you the fresh Coliseum concert the guy checked forward to your really try Jerry Butler singing their hits of “The brand new Freeze Guy Cometh,” and additionally “Precisely the Strong Endure.” Tom told you he remembers “Jerry, using a white match which have a beneficial quartet out-of stunning feminine vocal harmony trailing. Really don’t contemplate who my personal day try, however, she wanted I found myself because the chill as the Jerry Butler, and i also without a doubt desired she is actually as hot once the men and women vocalists.”
Concurrently, Sam Heys said that “my personal favorite and more than long-term recollections is actually the latest Jerry Butler Homecoming concert to the October. 24, 1969, as my blind date, Tap Finley, is still with me more than an one half-century later on.”

Such as for instance smoking cigarettes however the flames existed better longer. I didn’t understand I was watching joints being lit up. Never been close a mutual prior to. Individuals were passageway them all doing. After that you to strange however, sweet smell is every-where. I was thinking I found myself on Woodstock. From the assured my personal moms and dads failed to smelling they to my dresses while i had domestic.”
But, she said, “many enjoyable concert I went to there clearly was from the spring out-of 1974, and i saw the brand new Coasters, The new Platters and the Tams. Stood on to the floor ahead of the stage dance the fresh new whole time. ”

Not too all shows within Coliseum was basically a success. Dan Pelletier recalls the night Karen and you will Richard Carpenter “was in fact stinking within the combined and crowd booed, very Richard strolled off the stage from inside the a good huff. Karen came out and you can spoke to some of your own kept group and you may told me they’d become on the run and you may was in fact exhausted. ‘ No reimburse obtained.”

(Helen Castronis remembers Ponder still is energized while the “Little Stevie” at the time, and this appeared like “he starred all of the appliance on phase.”)
